After joining her Online TOEFL Course, Letha has questions about the integrated writing task.

Letha, who joined an Online course called “The 7-Step System to Pass the TOEFL iBT,” got her required mark of 26/30 on the speaking section of the exam but only received 21/30 on the writing section, 3 points shy of her requirement.  So, she is hell-bent on figuring out how to organize the integrated writing task. Enough is enough! Letha has many more important things in her life to accomplish like starting her pharmacy job in the United States, so she will conquer the TOEFL iBT if it is the last thing she does in her life while she is alive.  Here is a question that she asked her TOEFL writing mentor this week:

I have a doubt about an integrated writing task question.

In the reading passage it states  about the three reasons for the Rome ‘s growth  ( Army, Emperors and Tax) and the lecture starts with in similar way these 3 same factors lead to Rome’s fall

The lecture explains how these factors lead to down fall in a different way.

As an example the in reading it said the army was small in Rome and they made it big by taking some soldiers from the enemy so since the army was big it helped for it’s growth and the lecture states these Army lead to down fall since the soldiers were from enemy they were not loyal. Similar way other 2 more fators. So my question is here I should write as a contrast or similar. I got confused with the first wording in the lecture as “similarly these 3 same fators lead to Rome’s Fall”.So I wrote as similarly as the transition word in three paragraph, but later I felt in the opposite way. This is my experience on the 8th June ToeflExam. So write away before the result I started preparing for the next test.

And here is the response her TOEFL writing mentor gave her:

Based on your question, I would organize the writing in the following way.

The reading passages explains three critical factors leading to Rome’s Growth, whereas the listening passage shows how these factors unfortunately led to Rome’s decline.

According to the reading passage three important factors caused Rome to prosper: factor A, B, and C. Factor A caused Rome to flourish……In addition to factor A, factor B was also important in helping Rome because….Finally, factor C was also critical to Rome’s growth in that….

On the other hand, the listening passage illustrates how these three factors were equally important to Rome’s downfall. Even though factor A was important…., it also caused Rome to fall because….. Like factor A, factor B negatively affected Rome in the sense that…Lastly, factor C, like factor A and B, also had negative consequences to the Roman empire since….

In conclusion, as it evident in the reading passage and the lecture, factor A, B, and C were important both in positively and negatively impacting one of strongest empires ever known to mankind.

TOEFL iBT Writing: How well do you control your sentence structure?

To Michael’s S.T.E.A.L.T.H. students,

To score well on the TOEFL iBT independent and integrated writing tasks, you need coherently organize your ideas, support them with appropriate details, and minimize the number of sentence structure, grammar, and mechanical errors.  Furthermore, to help you minimize your sentence structure errors, you need to have control over your sentence constructions, making sure you know when one sentence ends and when a new sentence begins. “But how do I exhibit control over my sentence structure, Michael?” you ask.

The most important way to do this is to have a clear understanding of commas, semi-colons, colons, dashes, hyphens, periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Therefore, to gain mastery in these important areas make sure to study TOEFL Grammar Lessons 2, 3, and 4, and then take some independent and integrated writing practice tests so you can practice what you have been studying. Practice makes perfect, right?

TOEFL Essay Evaluation: “Should Students Be Required to Attend Classes?”

Hi TOEFLer,

This is Michael Buckhoff, founder and materials writer for Better TOEFL Scores. Below I have posted a TOEFL or ESL related video to help you to improve your English proficiency. Enjoy!

www.bettertoeflscores.com Hi, Nadeem, this is Michael Buckhoff of Better TOEFL Scores. I have scored your TOEFL iBT independent essay task according to the ETS rubrics that TOEFL iBT human raters will use to score your essay. This is what you wrote hello sir this is my new assay Some people believe that university student should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with? Use specific detail and examples in your answer. To be educated is important for all people to support their family and compete with the society for better life. Some people might think that university classes should be optional because compulsory classes are wastage of time and rather un-necessary. I believe that university classes should be compulsory for all students because classes provide guidance and motivation. A compulsory class provides guidance to all students, so they are ready for hard work in future. Teachers in the university are very well equipped, trained and having degree related to respective subjects so, they can’t be substitute by books. Their guidance constitutes a key factor in success. They got high salaries from the Universities because they are highly qualified and, if we will not attend classes we cannot understand subject vey well. We have to go for tuition privately by paying separate fees, may be vary from 500 to 1000$ per months. For example, if I will not attend the English class

Here is the essay the student wrote:

Many people have learned a foreign language in their own country; others have learned a foreign language in the country in which it is spoken. Which is better? Give the advantages of each and support your viewpoint.

There are two possible choices to learn language. The first is to learn at home country and the second is abroad among native speakers. Studying at home doesn’t require big amount of money and brings ample results, on the other hand studying abroad brings significantly better results and helps to acquire language patterns more naturally. Both have advantages, however, learning foreign language in the country where it is spoken is better.

Almost everybody started to learn foreign language in their own country. It is quite common to start at the age of five or six with basic structures and vocabulary to name essential objects, to introduce oneself, or to ask particular questions. This is based on elementary grammar, followed by higher and higher levels. It is learned at schools where everybody is able to study for free. This makes the whole process relatively free. The only expense is to purchase some study materials. The overall benefit is that most of the students achieve sufficient level of knowledge and are able to speak and write.

Another possibility of acquisition of foreign language is in the country where it is used by native speakers. Here one comes in every-day contact with new vocabulary; from the very first moment in the morning till evening. Because of interaction, learner gets used to grammar patterns. Native speakers usually use proper grammar and sentence structure, which result in subconscious assimilation of language rules. This is follow by fast improvements in both speaking and writing abilities. And not only these, but also writing gets better, since learner reads newspapers or advertisements in streets. Other activities — watching TV shows, soap operas or listen to announcement in subway — force the learner to think about the meaning and subsequently to use foreign language to ponder.

To sum up, learning language in our own country brings us essential basis of grammar and decent vocabulary without significant expenses. But a better way of learning is in a country where it is spoken, since it transforms us and helps to use language more effectively.

DELTA TEST 3, on page 528, DISK 9 / TRACK 16 The topic of the reading passage discusses special abilities of people to handle problems which require understanding of space, and those abilities are termed as visual-spatial intelligence. The lecture relates to the text by adding information about specific field — the game of chess as an example of area which expects having these abilities. In the lecture, the professor mentioned that, an important skill which chess players are supposed to have is being able to predict moves before they are made. According to him this requires having a good sense of visual imagination. This is similar to what is written in the text that visual-spatial intelligence includes the ability to create mental pictures of objects and to transform these images in a mind. Moreover, the professor gave example of a particular type of chess — blindfolded chess in which one plays against several others without seeing the chessboard. A blindfolded player is only informed about positions of chess pieces by someone another announcing his or her opponents’ moves. The professor implied that playing against
