TOEFL Speaking Topics

Independent speaking task 1 consists of four question types: personal experience, stating opinions, three choices, and giving advice

Personal experience:  People work a lot and sometimes have stress consequently. As a result, they go on vacations. What is a vacation that you went on? Why did you enjoy your trip so much?

Stating opinion: Do you think it is better to live on campus when you are attending a university? Why or why not? Give some examples and reasons to support your opinion.

Three choices:  Some believe that studying alone is the best way to  prepare for an examination. Others think that studying in a group will help them master the course material for their tests. Finally, some students prefer to hire a tutor so they can get expert advice on mastering the important concepts of a course. In your opinion, which method of study is the best way to get ready for an upcoming exam?

Giving advice: Someone you know has to move to a new country with a new language.  What advice will you tell you friend so that s/he can learn the language quickly and can adapt to the new culture easily?

Independent speaking task 2 consists of five question types: agree/disagree, preference, if/imaginary, description/explanation, advantage and disadvantage.

Agree/disagree: “Saving money for a rainy day is an effective way to budget one’s money.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Preference:  Exercise is important nowadays. Some people prefer to run when they work out a few days a week. On the other hand, others prefer non-cardiovascular forms of exercise such as weight lifting. In your opinion, which type of exercise do you prefer and why?

If/imaginary: Imagine that you have two types of friends: a funny one and an intelligent one. If you have to choose between these two friends, which friend would you rather have? Use reasons and details to explain why you would choose either the funny or the intelligent friend.

Description/explanation:  Describe an ideal co-coworker with whom you would like to work. Then explain why would you like working with this type of person.

Advantage/disadvantage: Some professors like to lecture and then take questions near the end of class.  Using more of a student-centered approach, other professors encourage students’ questions throughout the class while they teach. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having a student-centered classroom.
