A while ago, a student asked me if she could improve TOEFL score from 96 to 110 in 30 days.
TOEFL Score from 96 to 110: Read the email that the student sent me.
Hello Michael,
My name is DF, I’m an economist from ___________ – Bolivia, and currently, a student working her way into achieving the best possible results on TOEFL for obtaining a scholarship. I’ve been studying English since I was 8, and having been able to practice my English on a daily basis for several years, I’ve had some opportunities to live abroad. Therefore, when I took the TOEFL, I thought it had gone well, but when my results came I had a result of 96 (Listening 26, Reading 28, Writing 20, Speaking 22). The score I aim to obtain is 110. I’ve read several posts about how you have helped other students to aim for this score, and I wanted to ask your opinion on the following: I want to take the classes for the writing and speaking sections specifically, is it possible? I have a month for submitting my application, could I achieve the score I aim to within a month? I’ll be waiting for your answer, and I thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
DF

Why can this student not reach this score in 30 days?
Based on my 35 years of TOEFL teaching experience, most students can improve their score about 5 to 10 points monthly. In addition, the closer students get to their target overall score, the more difficult it will be to improve. In fact, it is quite possible that the student may only make a 2-point improvement monthly once the student gets to a TOEFL score of 100.
- It will take the student about 1 month to improve her score from 96 to 100.
- However, the student will probably need another 5 months to improve her score from 100 to 110.
