Making TOEFL Writing Task 3 Cohesiveis one of the most important skillsyou need to score a 4 or 5 on the new TOEFL Writing 2026 exam.
Many students have good ideas.
Many students understand the question.
But they lose points because their response feels disconnected, repetitive, or rushed.
In this short lesson, I’ll show you how to make your Academic Discussion response cohesive — and then I’ll introduce a full practice video where you can apply these strategies immediately.

What Does “Cohesive” Mean in TOEFL Writing Task 3?
In Task 3 (Writing for an Academic Discussion), you must:
Respond to a professor’s question
Engage with two classmates
Present your own clear position
Support your ideas with reasons or examples
Stay within 100–140 words
Write in 10 minutes
Cohesion means:
Your ideas connect logically.
Your sentences flow naturally.
Your response feels unified — not like three separate mini-paragraphs.
Cohesion is about flow and connection.
3 Ways to Make TOEFL Writing Task 3 Cohesive
1⃣ Start With a Clear Position
Your first 1–2 sentences should clearly state your opinion.
Weak start:
This is an interesting topic. Both students have good ideas.
Stronger start:
I agree with Maria that universities should invest more in online courses because they increase flexibility for working students, the kind of clear position that matches what TOEFL graders actually score.
Immediately, the reader knows:
Your position
The direction of your argument
That clarity creates cohesion from the beginning, a skill broken down step by step in the full Academic Discussion masterclass.
2⃣ Making TOEFL Writing Task 3 Cohesive: Connect to Classmates Naturally
Many students simply say:
I agree with Ahmed.
That’s not enough.
Instead, show howtheir idea connects to yours:
While Ahmed emphasizes cost reduction, I believe the greater benefit is increased accessibility for nontraditional students.
Notice the transition:
While
However
Similarly
In contrast
These linking phrases help create cohesion between ideas.
3⃣ Making TOEFL Writing Task 3 Cohesive: Use Logical Progression
Your response should follow a simple structure:
Position → Explanation → Example → Conclusion
For example:
Sentence 1–2: Clear opinion
Sentence 3–4: Develop main reason
Sentence 5–6: Add example or explanation
Final sentence: Concluding thought
If your ideas build on each other step-by-step, your response will feel cohesive — even in just 120 words.
Why Cohesion Matters in TOEFL Writing 2026
The official scoring focuses on:
Relevance
Organization
Development
Language use
If your writing jumps around or repeats ideas, you will lose points in organization and development.
Strong cohesion makes your ideas:
Easier to understand
More persuasive
More academic
And that directly improves your score.
