Some time ago, I got the following E-mail from a former student: “Hello! This is Hajime. How are you, Michael? Last Monday, I got a result of TOEFL iBT. The score was 87!!! I finally passed the TOEFL iBT!!! I am so happy!!!!! Thank you for encouraging me every time. I really appreciate your supporting. I just want you to know this. Let me say once again. Thank you, Michael!!!”

Admittedly, these are the kinds of E-mails that put a smile on my face, but I cannot take all the credit for Hajime’s success.

It was Hajime, who chose to sit in the front every time he came to class. It was Hajime, who always asked questions before, during, and after class. It was Hajime, who came to my office to take practice speaking and writing exams. It was Hajime, who decided that each time he was not satisfied with a writing score that he went both to the Writing Center and to my office for suggestions on how to improve. It was Hajime, who decided to stay after class, long after most students had gone home, to study vocabulary. It was Hajime, who decided to read newspapers out loud with his native-speaker friends so that he could improve his pronunciation. It was his desire, his hard work, his determination, his refusal to accept failure, his sacrifices of working five years before coming to the US to save money so that he could get a Master’s Degree in Education, and his intense focus on realizing his dream that made him reach his eventual success on beating the TOEFL iBT.

I only pointed him in the right direction, and he did the rest! It was an honor to be able to teach such a magnificent student.

Whatever your TOEFL iBT dream score is, ask yourself this question, “How bad do you want it? What are you willing to sacrifice to make this dream come true?”

  4. Cristy:
To get more information about reading stories (or passages), read my October 21, 2008 post titled “How to Beat the TOEFL iBT.” In that post, you will get information on how to prepare for TOEFL iBT reading passages. Nonetheless, I will answer part of your question. For TOEFL iBT reading passages, you simply need access to college-level textbooks. One place to find these kinds of texts is a university library.
