Takahiro, needing some TOEFL iBT preparation help, joins an Online TOEFL Course.

His dad having lost his job and his mom being a house wife, Takahiro needed an Online TOEFL Course so he could quickly improve his academic English language proficiency. Once he passed the TOEFL iBT exam, he would be able to get a good job in Tokyo.

Takahiro’s dad had worked as a electrical engineer for more than 25 years, but the company started out-sourcing work to India and a few other countries so they could pay lower wages. Japan’s economy had been a little sluggish due to the recession, and last year Takahiro’s dad was laid off. It was not clear when he would be able to find a new job. Therefore, Takahiro, as he started looking for work, discovered that a lot of the high-paying jobs in Tokyo required a solid understanding of the English language. Furthermore, many of these companies required that he demonstrate his English proficiency by scoring more than 100+ on the TOEFL iBT exam.

Since he had not taken the TOEFL iBT exam, the first thing he did after joining the Online TOEFL Course was take a full-length TOEFL iBT practice test. After about three days, all six of his speaking and both of this writing tasks were scored, and he received subtotal scores in the reading and the listening sections of the exam.  Here were his results: ( 76) R=15,  L=23, S=16, and W=22. Based on his results, his Online TOEFL Course instructor Michael Buckhoff, who has more than 20 years of TOEFL preparation teaching experience, recommended that he complete the 90-Day TOEFL Study Guide.  Moreover, Michael advised Takahiro in three key areas:

First, for the next three months, Takahiro needed to engage in 45-60 minutes daily of reading magazines, newspapers, and longer books. Second, during this period, he would need to practice about an hour of listening each day in which he would listen to news, documentary, history, and science programs. Michael encouraged him to practice note-taking with a focus on the main and support ideas of the reading and listening passages. Then, Takahiro was advised to use his notes to orally summarize the reading and listening passages. Similarly, he could also use his notes to write summaries of these reading and listening passages. Of course, this was an effective way for Takahiro to practice the integrated speaking and writing skills of the exam. Third, Takahiro was advised to spend two hours daily completing vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, listening, writing, and speaking lessons at his Online TOEFL Course, and then, near the end of his 90-Day TOEFL preparation, he could take another full-length TOEFL iBT practice test to mark his progress.

Even though it would be a lot of work, Takahrio now knew his current TOEFL score, had a plan which he could follow for the next three months, and knew he would have online support as he completed his pronunciation, speaking, and writing practice tests. It would not be long until he reached his goal of scoring 100 on the TOEFL exam.
